WHAT IS BROTHERHOOD?

The Meaning of Proverbs 17:17

The book of Proverbs is full of wisdom for everyday living. In Proverbs 17:17, we are told that "a friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity." This begs the question, what does it mean to be a friend? And what does it mean to be a brother?

Let's take a closer look.

The Meaning of "Friend"

The word "friend" can mean different things to different people. For some, a friend is someone you have known for years and share many common interests with. For others, a friend is someone you have just met but feel a strong connection to. The truth is, there is no one correct definition of the word "friend."

What we do know is that friends are important. They are the people we lean on when we need support and the ones we celebrate with when things are going well. Friends are there for us through thick and thin, which is why Proverbs 17:17 says that "a friend loves at all times." True friends are always there for us, no matter what.

The Meaning of "Brother"

While the word "brother" can literally refer to someone who shares our parents with us, it can also refer to someone who is like family to us even though we are not related by blood. These are the people who know us inside and out and accept us for who we are. Brothers (and sisters) are the people we can always count on, even when everyone else has given up on us.

Why We Need Both Friends and Brothers ?

We need both friends and brothers (or sisters) in our lives because they serve different purposes. Friends provide us with companionship and support, while brothers (or sisters) provide us with guidance and protection. Both are essential to our wellbeing.

In conclusion, Proverbs 17:17 tells us that friends love at all times and brothers are born for adversity. Friends provide us with companionship and support, while brothers provide us with protection and guidance. Both friends and brothers (or sisters) are essential to our wellbeing.
